Background

Children are born with tremendous potential and are ready to learn from day one. New research shows that the first five years of a child’s life are critical for learning. In fact, this time is when children are developing the foundation for all future learning!

During the early years, a child’s brain is being built, like a house, from the ground up. But instead of using hammers and nails, wood and other materials, a child’s brain is built by experiences and interactions with the adults in their lives. Even though we can’t see it happening, every time we connect with young children, it’s like fireworks in their brain. It’s not just their eyes that light up—it’s their brains too!

Positive interactions and engagement with parents help children’s brains grow strong. Parents who talk, play, and sing in back and forth interactions with their children are helping build their brains!

There are four areas of child development: cognitive (thinking), language, physical, and social-emotional. Children who experience loving and supportive relationships that stimulate these areas during their early years are prepared to thrive.
